SJI’s – Smooth Jazz Inc. was first opened in May 2006 and is the creation of Peter and Shirley Thurston. Originally from the UK and after 17 years of living and working abroad in Europe, Scandinavia and the Middle East. They returned to their home base of Malta and set about finding and creating a bar to their own tastes. As the name suggests the theme is jazz with some of the ‘greats’ photos adorning the walls.
A Unique feature is the courtyard garden, highly popular in the summer and heated in the winter, for those who smoke. With palms and hibiscus it provides a relaxing and atmospheric retreat allowing free conversation while listening to the music.
SJI’s is essentially a place where customers can enjoy a quiet drink in pleasant surroundings while listening to live music, with some of Malta’s finest talent or a selection of vinyl and CD’s played by Shirley. These feature everyone from Sinatra to Ella, Diana Krall to Michael Buble and Jamie Cullum. Throw in some Quincy Jones with a dash of Jazz Funk and some Stevie Wonder and you get the idea. Oscar Peterson, Chris Botti and many others provide the more traditional forms of the jazz genre. Over the years the conclusion is that piano bar jazz best suits the environment and this is an important factor in ensuring the relaxed atmosphere.
The bar is a reflection of Peter and Shirley and is only open when they are there. Peter enjoys singing with the musicians and has three CD’s to his credit. Shirley was a DJ in London many years ago at the Saddle Rooms and Barbarellas and she provides an excellent balance of recorded music that receives an enthusiastic response from the customers.
On offer are a range of spirits, wines, beers and classic cocktails along with some nibbles. Also available are quite substantial snacks including cheese platters, pate and smoked salmon to fill that gap at a reasonable price.
