About Lean Beef | Malta
What is considered lean beef?
First of all lets start with the term lean, lean means low in fat content which basically means you get all the benefits such as protein and iron but with less fat content. Lean also normally refers to the cholesterol levels within the beef and lean beef is normally much lower in cholesterol. There are different specifications for lean and extra lean beef which may vary from one country to another however generally for beef to be considered lean it must have lower than 10 grams of fat, 4.5 grams of saturated fat and 95 milligrams of cholesterol per 3.5 Ounce serving.
Some beef cuts are much leaner than others, in fact normally cuts containing the words “chuck”, “round” or “loin” are generally leaner cuts. As an example Sirloin is a relatively lean cut when compared to fillet or ribeye steak and makes a good substitute as a juicy tasty steak alternative to cuts with higher fat & cholesterol content. Also rump steak which is often sold as thin sliced steak is also relatively lean.
Furthermore there are obviously leaner beef options available based on what the animals where fed and the processes used in growing them, in many cases animals are intentionally fattened up before they are processed, nowadays there is more transparency and some producers specifically grow and prepare meats to ensure they are leaner for the benefit of health conscious consumers.
Most beef is relatively low in calories and lean beef is even lower.
Beneficial nutrients in lean beef:
Lean beef is good for you and many local butchers in Malta can advise you which cuts are lean and which are not, as an example the beef used in our popular “Brodu” beef is generally very lean and so are other cuts.
