About Chauffeurs | Malta
Chauffeur’s have long been associated with a position of luxury – traditionally a chauffeur was an individual employed to drive a personal motor vehicle (especially luxury vehicles such as limousines), and was the personal servant of the vehicle owner.
Nowadays, there exist many chauffeur service companies that provide both a driver and vehicle for hire on an as-needed basis, which could be just a one off trip to the airport, or a 6 month daily contract driving the client to and from work. There are however specialist companies that still provide only qualified drivers to be hired by clients, for their own vehicles.
When the first automobiles came out, only the very rich could afford to own them, and they generally liked to employ a personal driver to enhance their status, as well as for the drivers knowledge. Infact, the word “chauffeur” refers to the French word “stoker” – since the earliest models of cars were steam powered like trains and ships, the driver was required to stoke the engine.
As car models advanced to early petrol powered motor cars, they still did not have an electrical ignition, and they needed to be pre-heated before the engine could start. The chauffeur’s job was thus to prime the hot tubes that needed heating, as well as maintain the car(routine maintenance, cleaning, etc). The early chauffeur’s had to be skilled auto mechanics to deal with the very common breakdowns and punctures of the early years – something that a very wealthy car owner would not want to get dirty doing himself.
In today’s world there are two main types of chauffeurs: Those who are employed full time to drive their employer in the employer’s personal vehicle, and those who are employed by a professional service that offers chauffeur driven limousines and rental cars. The latter is similar to taking a taxi, but much more luxurious.
The benefits of utilizing a chauffeur or a chauffeur service include convenience, productivity, time savings and driving safety. If someone else is driving you, you are free to focus on other activities such as working on a laptop, or talking on the phone. Using a chauffeur can save you a lot of time, as well as be safer, if you are in a new location and are unfamiliar with the roads and driving conditions. The fact that chauffeurs are specially trained to handle driving in various weather and road conditions also puts many people’s minds at ease, regarding their safety and the safety of their loved ones.
The legal requirements to be a chauffeur vary drastically depending on the class of vehicle being driven and the country it’s being driven in – in some locations only a simple permit is required, but in others additional professional licenses with minimum standards in areas such as driving experience, criminal record, training attended, etc is required.
Chauffeur’s are normally taught a certain level of etiquette and attend customer care training courses, so that they uphold their companies reputation in the presence of a client. Some are also trained for additional services to VIP clients, such as body-guarding.
