About Bathroom Tiles | Malta
Bathrooms were made for tiling! With the wide variety of sizes and styles of bathroom tiles available, you have the freedom to create the kind of atmosphere that would be nearly impossible with paint alone.
Part of the beauty of bathroom tiles is that they’re practical – they’re water resistant, easy to wipe down and clean, and the grout between the tiles on the floor helps provide traction for wet feet. If you’re redecorating your bathroom, there is also the fact that bathroom tiles are easy to DIY to your advantage. As for the price of the actual tiles – you’re limited only by your budget, as you can buy them from as little as a few euros a square meter going all the way up in price, depending on how extravagant you get.
What types of bathroom tiles are there:
There are two general types of bathroom tiles, with many subcategories.
1. Ceramic bathroom tiles
This is the most common option, and normally the best option for those looking for minimal upkeep. Ceramic tiles include: Glazed conventional tiles, unglazed porcelain tiles, and glazed porcelain tiles. Porcelain tiles are the better option because they are dense and impermeable – making cleaning and maintenance much easier.
When choosing ceramic bathroom tiles, you have to think about where they’re going to be placed. You don’t want to place ceramic tiles with texture on them inside the shower, as they’ll get gunk in their crevices from soaps, skin flakes, etc, and due to the texture they will be difficult to get completely clean! On the other hand, you don’t want to use a polished or glazed ceramic tile for the bathroom floor either – since it will be very slippery when wet.
If you really like the texture and don’t mind the extra upkeep, or plan to place bathmats on the floor to combat slipperiness, then these are non issues, but they are something to consider when picking out your chosen tiles. Remember, with bathroom tiles you can play around with the shapes, sizes and colors to have a complementary color scheme that also works practically in your bathroom.
2. Natural stone bathroom tiles
Natural stone tiles can either bring a more soft earthy touch, or add a masculine rugged look to your bathroom. They have a style that cannot be recreated with ceramic tiles. They can also be a lot more work to maintain than ceramic tiles.
When picking a natural stone bathroom tile, try to go for the hardest type of stone. There are many types of natural stone tiles available, with limestone being the softest, then slate, then marble, and quartzite and granite being the hardiest and densest stones available. The harder the stones, the less permeable they are as well – and important quality in a bathroom, where there is a lot of moisture.
If you have a steam shower, do not use natural stone – the steam will permeate into the stone more readily than liquid water, and you risk mold and mildew problems, as well as algae.
Do I have to use bathroom tiles in my bathroom:
No. You don’t have to use bathroom tiles in your bathroom, but they tend to be a lot more convenient. Wiping down tiles with a sponge and some cleaning solution is a lot easier than trying to get marks/mold off of a wall.
The only place you are strongly recommended to use bathroom tiles is where there is a shower head involved, and especially in shower/bathtub combos – to have tiles going up about halfway on the wall. This is to act as a backsplash against the water (similar to the use of tiles behind the sink in a kitchen), and protect your walls.
What bathroom tiles are best for bathroom floors:
This depends on your personal preference. Small tiles can be very attractive on bathroom floors, as well as providing extra traction for wet feet due to the grout between them. On the other hand, that extra grout that provides traction will also require a lot more cleaning as there is a lot more space for dirt and grime to get into.
Large tiles can be used to make a bold impact with color (such as a chess board pattern), and have the advantage of requiring less clean up. They don’t however offer as much traction, so make sure not to get overly glossy or glazed tiles for your floor.
The only location there is a specific recommendation for size of bathroom tiles on the floor is for shower floors. Tiling for shower floors is recommended to be between 2×2 inches, up to a max of 6 inches, to make allowances for the conical shape of the floor in that location.
What bathroom tiles are best for bathroom walls:
Bathroom walls are where you can really let loose! Glazed, unglazed, small, large, natural stone or bright and glossy – it’s all down to the look and feel you’re going for! If you like the look of small tiles but are concerned about wasting hours individually sticking them on, you’ll be happy to know that many manufacturers provide these tiles in a “mosaic” of small tiles that make up a square, so it allows you the ease of working with large tiles, with the effect you’re looking for.
Many people recommend using small tiles for small bathrooms, and large tiles for big bathrooms, but that is simply a matter of personal preference. Remember, you can also mix and match – use large tiles with strips of small tiles in between to break them up for example.
The only thing you really need to keep in mind is wether you’re interested in the extra upkeep of additional grout, or textured tiles, or natural stone tiles. If you want a low maintenance, fuss free bathroom, go with medium-large ceramic glazed tiles.
