About Gharghur Karate Club in Malta
Introduction to Karate
The word Karate literally means “empty hand”. In fact Karate is a form of martial art where its practice involves no weapons but a variety of techniques, punches, blocks and kicks. The hands and feet are used to block and strike when necessary to defend one self. There are many several Karate styles each having their own characteristics such as emphasizing speed, power and hip rotation while other styles concentrate on competitions, self-defense and other variations of technique applications.
Funakoshi Gichin is the founder of Shotokan Karate. He was born in Okinawa and was the first to introduce Tang Hang in Japan in 1917. In 1936 he modified his own style and renamed it to “Karate”. There are several other Karate styles, one of the main styles being Shotokan Karate. Shotoan Karate is based on Kihon (basic techniques), Kata (forms) and Kumite (sparring). They must be studied as one and all three encompass speed, agility, technique and strength.
